Our foundation mustangs

Our horses are the very foundation of the Phoenix Haven program, each with a unique story and an incredible capacity for connection. Meet King, our first mustang – a 5-year-old bay gelding. He arrived untouched, an ideal partner for our program, gifted to us by a wonderful family who knew he would thrive in helping our soldiers. Working with King teaches patience; he shows participants how trust blossoms over time and that worth is always in the waiting. Then there's Apollo, a 7-year-old bay gelding mustang. Despite being pre-trained for mounted shooting, he struggled in indoor arenas due to past negative trainer experiences. Now at Phoenix Haven, Apollo is rediscovering his potential through barrel racing and trail riding. He demonstrates that even after trials and tribulations, success is always on the horizon, and there's always a light at the end of what feels like a tunnel. Together, they offer empathy, emotional connection, physical regulation, and grounding, forming profound bonds that aid in healing and personal growth. As Phoenix Haven grows, our herd will expand, welcoming more mustangs into our nurturing program.

The mustang-soldier bond

American mustangs, after being captured and moved to holding facilities, share a profound parallel with American soldiers. Both once lived lives of freedom, without schedules or marching orders, until their world dramatically shifted. They are placed in situations that evoke fight or flight, feeling cornered or corralled, forcing them into new, often incomprehensible chapters. Over time, both find a new rhythm, yet they still face emotional and mental stress. Just as excessive stress harms animals, it profoundly affects humans. Recognizing this shared background, a unique 'trauma bond' often forms between soldiers and mustangs. Acknowledging that both have undergone significant trauma, though in different ways, allows them to build a progressive future together, fostering understanding and resilience.
