The spark: From a mother's dream to a living legacy
Phoenix Haven began as a profound idea from a mother, Denise, whose dream was to combine a passion for horses with a deep commitment to military families. Though she couldn't bring it to fruition herself, her family, deeply rooted in military life and horse enthusiasts, embraced her vision to make it a reality. We believe in creating a space for individuals to rise from the ashes of their past, embrace their present, and forge a powerful future.
Our focus is on supporting soldiers and veterans dealing with PTSD, mental health challenges, and providing a unique understanding of the equine industry. The mustangs we work with are originally from the Bureau of Land Management, and as they undergo training, they demonstrate a powerful progression, rising from their former selves to what they are becoming—a journey very similar to what many in our military community experience.
Mustangs & veterans: A parallel journey to healing
Working with American Mustangs—formerly wild horses gathered from public lands—offers veterans and service members a uniquely powerful and healing experience. Both Mustangs, removed from their natural environment, and veterans adjusting to civilian life, share a parallel journey of re-establishing trust and purpose. This shared experience fosters deep empathy, allowing veterans to see their own struggles and triumphs reflected in the horses' progress.
Our program helps develop emotional regulation, rebuilds trust through nonverbal communication, and restores confidence as veterans participate in the purposeful mission of training and gentling a once-wild animal. It's a mutually rehabilitative journey, combining animal therapy, nature, and meaningful work for profound healing without words. This connection provides immediate feedback, reinforcing competence, purpose, and the satisfaction of progress, mirroring military values like discipline and teamwork.
